South Indian Silver Strand with 18 Amulet Boxes

This fine strand comprises eighteen silver amulet boxes on a ‘rope’ of braided silver wires. Each of the amulet boxes is of cylindrical form with flattened sides and pointy ends, and unusually, each has been cast with a crescent moon motif. Fruit-shaped spacers beads keep the amulet boxes apart.

Traditionally, such strands were worn as waist belts (patti aranjanam) but latterly are worn as necklaces. Untracht (1997, p. 127) notes that such belts were worn by male and female kathakali dancers, as well as for everyday use.

The strands has a wonderful patina. The silver used is very pure.

The strand is in fine condition and easily wearable as a necklace.
