Gold has always been admired in South East Asia but not its colour and so ways were found to stain it red, to ‘improve’ its relatively ‘unattractive’ yellow colour! Malaysia is artificial country created out of colonialism. Its borders were artificially determined by outside interests. The Dutch and the British split the Malay world and so today the Malay world is shared between Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, and Singapore. The Malaysian government has had to make amends for this deficiency by getting Malaysians to focus on the future and not on the past. It often does this with elaborate and expensive stunts. The twin towers in Kuala Lumpur are just one example.

Bangkok’s Wat Rajabopit (or formally Wat Rajabopit Sathitmahasimaram Ratchaworawihan) is decorated with the most extraordinary Bencharong tiles. The temple was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). A royal cemetery containing the ashes of past kings and other Thai royals is on the west side of the temple grounds.
