Modern & Contemporary Burmese Paintings

The fall of Burma's Konbuang Dynasty in 1885 and the coming of British Colonialism to Burma saw massive changes for Burmese artists. Court artists needed to re-orient their work for new clients, and with the British they learned new techniques. This was hastened by the British who established art schools and actively encouraged a flourishing local arts industry. They established art schools and held competitions both in Burma and internationally which helped to establish many new Burmese artists. Nor was Burma immune from European tends: Impressionism made its way to Burma for example. The paintings below date from the early 20th century to more recent times.
